The Brain Changing Benefits Of Exercise

It’s a known fact that regular exercise can keep our body healthy and fit. But, do you know regular exercise will also impact your brain cells to be active all day long?

If your answer is no, then you must read the complete article to know how exercise has great impact on your brain cells.

Wendy Suzuki a neuroscientist from New York says, Exercise is the most transformative thing you can do for your brain. It can have immediate effect on your body, mood, focus and positive effect on your brain. It will also protect your brain from different conditions such as depression, Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

She even said that it has immediate, long lasting and protective benefits for your brain that lasts rest of your life. An experiment has been done on herself where she discovered the science underlying why exercise is the most transformative thing that you can do to your brain.

Key Areas Of Brain:

Generally, our brain is the most complex structure of our body. It has two key areas that actually impact us effectively in all the things we do on regular basis.

The first key area is prefrontal cortex, which lies exactly behind your forehead and that concentrate on critical decision making, focus, attention and personality. The second key area is temporal lobe and we do have two temporal lobes located both right and left side of our brain.

Deep in the temporal lobe, there is a key structure that has critical form of ability and retains long term memories for facts and events. This is called hippocampus.

This key area generally focus on constant and immediate memories in your brain  that lasts longer for the entire lifetime, just as the moment the first child was born or something like your appearance on your wedding day.

Hippocampus is the only thing that allows our brain to form new memories. She said, she went through an experiment that is unusual to science and switched her research program as she encountered with something so amazing that has potential to change many people lives.

Then she discovered brain changing effects of exercise. It took many days for her to realize the importance of exercise in her life and she gained 25 pounds without moving her body for so long.

She said “I’ve tried everything like yoga, dance class, step class, kick box and it was really hard in the start. But what I noticed that after every sweat induced workout that I tried, I had this great mood and energy boost every time”. This thing kept her to hit gym everyday.

Regular exercise is the only thing that will keep you strong and help you to concentrate on things you love to do. Exercise can actually change your brain and give you better mood, better energy, better memory and better attention too.

How Exercise Is The Most Transformative Thing To Your Brain:

The following are the three reasons that will help you to understand why exercise has been the most transformative thing to your brain.

  • The first thing is, it has immediate effect on your brain. A single exercise will increase the levels of dopamine, serotonin and help your neurotransmitters to communicate faster. A single workout can shift your focus into attention and changes the brains anatomy, physiology and function says Wendy.
  • The second thing is it improves attention function depending on your prefrontal cortex. Increasing hippocampus volume leads to increase in focus and attention as well.
  • Finally, it has long lasting effects on your mood that keeps you stay in good mood.

But, according to Wendy the most transformative thing that exercise will do is its protective effects on your brain. Because, the two key areas of the brain are most susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases. However, you cannot cure the diseases completely, but regular exercise will have very low effects on your brain.

So, you don’t need to hit the gym everyday by spending a huge amount. But a simple walk for some distance also has huge effects on your brain and body. Make sure to do workout at least 30 minutes in a day that has positive effects on your brain.

You can even follow exercise only 3 to 4 times in a week of a session of 30 minutes. Just something like jogging, walking that raises your heart rate.
